Does anyone else feel like our country is spinning out of control?  To think…what have our parents been through and seen over the last 70-75 years?  What do they think about this country and where it’s headed?  With our President , the media being so one-sided, the economy and health care, what is going to happen to our kids in 10-15 years?  My wife and I know we can not worry about all of these things but we wonder when will things lighten up, when will the country get back on track and who besides Glenn Beck will ask the really tough questions?  My wife and I can only have conversations with ourselves, our kids and our friends and continue to “plan smart” for the future…I hope you do too!

Today I read an article discussing the downturn in the economy and how it could turn out to be “a golden opportunity” for the Web leaders to solidify their dominant position. While the smaller companies simply try to survive, larger companies can invest in reinforcing customer relationships with new products, services, and technologies, thus increasing their market/mind share further. Does this mean that smaller companies do not have a chance? NO.
Smaller companies do however need to take a page out of the playbook from the leaders and invest in low cost, high return communications like email marketing. I say high return because the most cost effective, flexible and easy to use modality for communications is email marketing (truth about email marking).  Not only is email marketing cost effective but in today’s environment where budgets are being scrutinized left and right email is tractable and it can be changed immediately if needed. In order to give validity to any allocation of funds, marketing and company executives alike must be able to justify the costs and tie those costs back to communications for an effective Return on Investment.

How do you grow your opt-in list. The easiest way for you to build your opt-in email list is to offer something of value that the subscribers want to learn about. The simplest way is to them during the sign up process. Be sure to explain to the subscriber exactly what they will be receiving from you and at what frequency by which they will be receiving the email once they opt-in. There is no use sending unwanted content to the recipient because they will delete your messages, unsubscribe or worse mark the email as spam. Have multiple options for the types of communications (daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly) and then ask questions of your recipient. Then be sure to use the data you receive from those questions to send them relevant marketing messages. Ask yourself this, “What is the value of a retailer sending offers for women’s golf shorts to the male tennis player”? Then think about how often this has happened to you.
